Alternative Fishing
River Fishing
We are extremely fortunate at Corrib Angling Services to have two of the premier brown trout rivers in the west of Ireland right on our doorstep — the River Robe and the River Clare. Both rivers hold an abundance of above-average wild brown trout and offer outstanding fishing throughout the season.
The River Robe rises near Ballyhaunis and flows for approximately 60km before draining into Lough Mask. Later in the season it receives a strong run of lake trout on their spawning migration. The river also boasts an excellent stock of resident trout, averaging between 0.5kg and 1kg. These fish can be successfully targeted with nymphs or dry flies, and there is good access along much of the river, making it suitable for anglers of all abilities.
The River Clare is the largest river in the Corrib catchment, running for over 90km from its source north of Ballyhaunis in County Mayo. It supports a superb population of resident trout, with reliable hatches of Mayfly, Olives, and Sedge. In late May, the river enjoys a strong run of migratory trout from Lough Corrib, with fish averaging between 1kg and 3kg. Calm summer evenings can be truly magical, casting to large trout sipping adult flies well into the hours of darkness. A permit is required to fish many stretches of the river, but our experienced guides can arrange access and ensure you are fishing the most productive water. The River Clare also receives a reasonable run of salmon, with the summer grilse run providing the best opportunities.
Hill Loughs
The trout in these remote hill loughs may not be the largest you will ever catch, but they are completely wild, incredibly free-rising, and present in huge numbers. Few angling experiences compare to fishing secluded hill loughs surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
We typically fish these waters with five-weight rods and light leaders, creating exciting, fast-paced, action-packed days where surface takes are the norm rather than the exception.
Sea Trout and Salmon
We also offer the chance to fish for sea trout and salmon in the wild loughs of Connemara. Our guides will take you to renowned fisheries such as Costello and Fermoyle, Lough Inagh, and Kylemore Lough.
While salmon numbers in Ireland have declined in recent years and can present a greater challenge, sea trout fishing in these western loughs can still provide excellent sport. Many fisheries have seen encouraging improvements in catch returns in recent seasons.
A day spent chasing sea trout and salmon amid the dramatic mountains and glens of Connemara is an unforgettable experience — one that creates memories to last a lifetime.
